"She told me that I had the perfect 'look,'" recalls Carroll. "And that I had the perfect personality—they kept saying I was friendly and personable—for what they were looking for."
What they were looking for, Carroll says, was an informant—someone to show up at "vegan potlucks" throughout the Twin Cities and rub shoulders with RNC protestors, schmoozing his way into their inner circles, then reporting back to the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force, a partnership between multiple federal agencies and state and local law enforcement. The effort's primary mission, according to the Minneapolis division's website, is to "investigate terrorist acts carried out by groups or organizations which fall within the definition of terrorist groups as set forth in the current United States Attorney General Guidelines."
Active democracy was starting to get out of hand.
What the "War on Drugs" did to poor, inner city America, the "War on Terror" aims to do to everyone, everywhere not on board the military-corporate mother ship.
f#ckers...
Remember when the Army was spying of peace groups and Quakers? The frightening thing about this is that it's up to the AG to determine the guidelines. Alberto Gonzales would put them all in jail, forever, without access to lawyers, without rights, all the better to cover up his political/criminal behavior. The Republicans and RNC go beyond creepy, approaching un-American, bordering on criminal. I have accepted, based on past actions and a "profile" of the RNC model operative, that this story is true. There are over 100,000 on the terrorist watch list now, and there's a list of 20,000,000 in the United States subject to arrest under the Bush/fascist regime. We are ALL subject to arrest, or even kidnapping, and can be held without charges, without legal recourse, and can be tortured until we admit to our "crimes." All on the say-so of Bush or one of his lackeys. I don't like what my country has become under the Bush regime and the influence of the RNC. Let's hold them responsible for their actions next year.
Yes my friend, all true, however, don't sell the DoJ out just yet. There are plenty of "Vegans" in the DoJ who certainly are not going to stomach this.
Sure, their food is sometimes bland and makes me gassy, but I didn't think that qualified vegans as terrorists. This is just a move to squelch dissent and take away our right to peaceful protest. Disgusting and un-American. Sounds like the FBI are the real terrorists here.
I'll volunteer! I love potlucks! I'll bring the burgers!
hey, I would bring sausage! everyone likes sausage, even vegans. before you go crazy on me, ever heard of a Boca sausage?
"This is all part of a larger government effort to quell political dissent," says Jordan Kushner, an attorney who represented Ganley and other Critical Mass arrestees. "The Joint Terrorism Task Force is another example of using the buzzword 'terrorism' as a basis to clamp down on people's freedoms and push forward a more authoritarian government."
Succinctly stated.
Sounds like something the Gestapo and Nazis would do. Quite terrifying that our freedom is being attacked by our own government. The Executive has claimed too much power. The Attorney General should never again be the President's close friend. Bush practically MADE Gonzalez who he is today, and he is the one who is supposed to protect me FROM Bush? Get these crooks out of the White House and send them back to Texas.
The ultra-depressing part of this is, for me anyway, that my once-reliable "I'll kill 'em!" reaction is very slow in coming. Something about desensitization, or maybe I'm beginning to suspect we might not win this one. Since we've lost so many of these fights -- often before we even knew they were taking place.
What's a democracy to do. I honestly don't know any more.

Mind boggling isn't it? It can be so depressing at times. One can't plug back into the matrix without serious brain damage, so what is to be done?
Stalin would have been proud.
Stalin would have been proud.
More like jealous. "Hey, those were my ideas!"
Has someone in the world of vegans done something to cause our gov't. to suspect them? I suppose that would be called a classified fact. Though facts seem to be absent in the bigger picture. What's next, Quilting Bees? Watch out for those evil ladies with needles, sewing messages into their creativity!!
Give me a break - this story wouldn't have passed muster even in a high school journalism class. It's nothing but a tale told by a punk U of M sophomore who thinks vandalizing elevators is fun. There's not a single corroborating fact offered. To fluff it up a bit, the story tosses out some unrelated acts by different agencies in other cities in different eras. Pathetic.
That said, I imagine there WILL be undercover operatives circulating through groups planning demonstrations - Chicago in 1968 and the Seattle WTO riots in 1999 pretty much make it a public safety requirement. If your organization isn't planning anything violent or disruptive, no one will give a damn what you say or do. If anyone did, most of us would have already been arrested.
At times like this, I take direction from the Dalai Lama: "We must maintain our optimism; we must maintain our determination." I find that to be good advice, not easy, but beneficial. There is a larger goal for humanity, which transcends all the machinations of psychopaths.
Tensions are so high right now I hope nobody gets hurt or worse.
I have this huge white dog. She's getting old and likes to lay in front of the picture window of the little house that I somehow manage to buy. In the front yard there is some kind of giant white lilly blooming. It is always a surprise to see what pops up in the yard from whatever bulbs the previous owners have buried in the ground. After work, I walk that big polar bear of a dog around the block. Kids run out to pet her. My neighbors say hello. I come home and my girlfriend and I make love. I'm not talking sex, here. I am talking making a meal, sweeping the floor, watching a movie, singing a song... even @!$%#ing about the dog hair and the checkbook is makiing love.
This is where I live. There is a great power in that human connection. It is a great defense against all manner of political intrigue and catastrophe. The saddest thing in all of this, the reason why the 'terrorists' are winning is that we have let the media and politicos rob us of our trust and intimacy.
No matter what party wins the election. My big white dog will lay in front of the window. Go out and make eye contact with a perfect stranger, someone very different from you, and say hello. It is one tiny step against genocide, assasination, enslavement, poverty that is within our power. Could be a serial killer or a mad rapist. That small chance, that risk is what makes it fun, but the payoff of human compassion is so powerful if we just learn how to enjoy it, the way we enjoy the hard hitting, immediate thrill of pain and fear.
And we'll send you glad tidings from New York
Open up your eyes sa you may see
Ask you not to read between the lines
Hope that you will come in right on time
And they'll talk to you while you're in trances
And you'll visualize not taking any chances
But meet them halfway with love, peace and persuasion
And expect them to rise for the occasion
Don't it gratify when you see it materialize
Right in front of your eyes
Van Morrison
Everyone should get past "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Moondance." Those are great songs, no doubt, but there is so much more.
They laughed at me and called me crazy when I told my Argument and Persuassion class that taking action against ambiguously defined groups (i.e. terrorists) is a dangerous thing to let your government do. We could probably all be defined as terrorists for typing on this thread. Excuse me while I go rig my tofique soy based plastic explosive substitute.

Tell them again. And again, and again.
Oh, and you believe that everyone that was in the Nazi party, SS or the Gestapo agreed with every order, or idea of Hitler? Well myfriend, let me invite you to watch a movie called Schindler's list.

Not sure where you got that idea. Don't know how to respond. Can't tell where you're coming from. Did you even follow the link?
I've seen the movie and still can't tell what's going on in your head. Care to explain how you think you know what I think about the SS or what ever? Or even how it relates to the terrorists argument and the loss of our rights as the good Judge explains?
If you're fishin', get some clue about how to bait the hook. You'll be on the bank all day and hungry at night.
Love this stuff. Its been going on straight through from the 60's. San Francisco was a major center of this kind of stuff right up to the 90's. The ACLU's local chapter was finally able to force the local police to release records of groups they had been spying on, doing these kind of things. The ADL had been playing a key role in spying on groups here. It peaked with Judi Bari and Daryl's bomb under the seat of their car that knocked Earth First into a hole it never really recovered from.
The 1984 Democratic Convention was just as intense as the 68 and 04 events.
Stories of provocateurs all the way back to the assination of MLK have to be understood as part of the establishment and its fear of any organized opposition that is willing to go onto the streets.
I was surprised to find out that the one of the college campuses most watched by the FBI in the sixties was Alabama. It had to do with concerns about race riots (and rightly so, I suspect).
They set up informal spying networks on every campus in the country. My brother was approached after getting out of the military, when he went to college with the GI bill.
There was a huge cultural shift from the early to the late baby boom period, depending on whether or not how much they were into the whole Ozzy and Harriet thing.
The best recruits were ex vets or sunday school types that were always being picked on, PK's etc.
Expect lots of moles here as well. Just be yourself! :)
It's so hard to type with these over sized hands. I told Ron Paul I wouldn't be good at this.
I think spying in these blogs is a huge waist of time and money. More so, I think most spying is a huge waist of time and money. In this day and age, pretty much anyone that is savvy enough to blog and send text messages on a cell phone, is smart enough to assume everything they do is public record anyway, and anyone can read it, including the government. so if there was a group of clandestine vegans out there, i doubt newsvine would be the place to spy on them.
More so, one note about people in this day and age who are true vegans. If you know a true green vegan, which you probably do, they tend to pay very close attention to details, especially when you go to a bar or restaurant. I have yet to meet a vegan that takes anything at face value. For example, if they menu says "Spaghetti and Marinara sauce" the vegan will inquire with the server if there is "veal bones or chicken broth in the sauce." If the menu says "mash potatoes," here again, is there chicken broth in it?" i would think it would be very difficult to infiltrate a vegan group or fool a vegan. All you would have to do is slip up on using Worcestershire or Soy sauce one day (anchovies) , and you would be exposed.
They also have that notorious death pinch and can mind meld.
@!$%#. You only get those skills if you are a 33rd degree PETA member living in Hollywood.
Oh. I get it, there's a new round of joke TV ads attacking vegans going around!
We must be getting out of control again. Who did it this time Pam Anderson I bet.
They also have that notorious death pinch and can mind meld.
Surround yourself with veal cutlets* and you'll be fine.
Not that was truly in bad taste.... as was that.
*Disclaimer: I don't eat veal.
It is simple, me and my Rottweiler Joe, have a deal with my wife, if we catch it, and/or kill it ourselves, then we get to cook and eat it. Otherwise, joe gets green beans and rice, and I get Mushroom stroganoff or Tofu Spaghetti, or spinach casserole. Joe and I have notice some nice looking squirrels in the backyard lately. It has been a while since squirrels have ventured are way. Montreal Steak seasoning is best on squirrel. Usually, we just catch us some fish.
